Raines-Dubost grandchildren Kali (1) and Cameron (3) helped harvest the 2009 viognier. Kate gave them scissors for safety and showed them how to choose a ripe cluster and cut it off the vine.
"After the excitement of using scissors wore off," said Kate, "their enthusiasm for picking quickly waned. Then they just wanted to eat the grapes and Cameron ran around and shot pictures of his tennis shoes with my camera."
But generational respect runs strong in the Dubost-Raines family, and I have a feeling we will see more of Cameron and Kali helping out as the 2009 vintage progresses.
Kali carefully cuts her cluster. Notice the working position of her hat.
Cameron gets that bossy winemaker look in his eye.
Dubost Ranch has been a part of the central coast's history for almost 100 years. Our vineyards and winery are on 320 acres of hillsides in the heart of Paso Robles' Adelaida range, where we also grow olives, pomegranates and persimmons, and produce our own limited-production olive oil. The climate and limestone soils of northwest Paso Robles are perfect for producing premium grapes, and our straw bale winery is a model for sustainable production facility. Our winemaker and son Jake Raines heads the production and vineyard team.
